HOUSTON—The message on the signs at the recycling drop-off site here was clear, and warmly welcomed by area residents who visited on a recent autumn Saturday to stuff bags of plastic waste into large green metal containers.
“All plastic, all numbers, all symbols,” proclaims one sign at the recycling site in Houston’s suburban Kingwood community, referring to the seven standard types of plastics, commonly identified on a plastic product by a number inside a “chasing arrows” icon. “Bag it and bring it,” reads another.
Normally, recycling programs limit what kinds of plastic they accept, ruling out types that are difficult…

UK opens electronic travel authorization scheme
The UK’s electronic travel authorization (ETA) scheme has officially opened for Qatari nationals who, from today, need one to travel to the UK.
This landmark opening demonstrates the UK government’s delivery in transforming and digitizing the UK border, enabling an increasingly seamless customer experience in the future for the millions of legitimate visitors who come to the UK.
Qataris have been able to apply for their ETA since 25 October 2023, with most doing so using the mobile app, which allows for a simple and fast application.
Last year, the UK welcomed almost 800,000 visitors from the Gulf, 45,000 of…
Academic buildings to get new electronic door locks | E-News
WVU contractors will install new exterior door locks at 13 academic buildings on the Downtown Campus between now and Aug. 1 to automate operations and improve security.
This work will be done in two phases that could be several weeks apart, the first to run new required cabling and the second to replace the locks. Although these activities may affect pedestrian traffic flow at times, they will not otherwise disrupt classroom operations.
All building supervisors will be notified when work is scheduled to begin at their location; the precise dates are not currently set. However, buildings will be upgraded in…
Public Advisory: Electronic Logging Devices Mandatory Effective December 1, 2023
Provincial carriers are reminded that effective December 1, 2023, those that travel more than 160 kilometers outside their home terminal or temporary work site, and that are required to track hours of service by filling out a record of duty status, will be required to have electronic logging devices installed in commercial vehicles. These devices are used to track a driver’s hours and monitor compliance with the Hours of Service Regulations.
Vehicles will be checked primarily at weigh scale stations throughout the province for mandatory electronic logging device usage. School bus drivers in this province are exempt from using electronic…

The Course: Electronic Media Production
If you enjoy visual storytelling, multitasking, video production, and the idea of learning how to direct a live multicamera production doesn’t sound intimidating, then Electronic Media Production (JOUR 202), is the class for you.
“I joke that directing is like multitasking on steroids. In the beginning most students are overwhelmed with all of the director responsibilities; however, once they do it there is a great sense of accomplishment,” said Ream, who teaches Electronic Media Production for undergraduate students. Ream is also executive producer of UNLV-TV, housed in the Hank Greenspun School of Journalism and Media Studies.
Ream recently celebrated her…
Mercury (MRCY) to Supply Electronic Warfare Training Subsystems
Mercury Systems MRCY has secured a significant five-year contract worth $243.8 million from the US Navy. This indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity contract is set to supply rapidly reprogrammable electronic attack training subsystems for the Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division.
Leveraging more than 25 years of test and training technology from the Mercury Processing Platform, these subsystems aim to provide cutting-edge jamming and electronic warfare capabilities to US pilot training organizations.
Mercury’s digital RF memory (DRFM)-based reactive jamming subsystems offer flexibility, enabling training planners to quickly reprogram missions across various aircraft through an intuitive software interface.
Moreover, these systems can simulate…
Toward more flexible and rapid prototyping of electronic devices | MIT News
Whether you are a new employee, a gymnast, or a bendy straw manufacturer, one trait is ideal across the board: flexibility.
The same can now be said about prototyping electronic devices. While designers typically test out their designs on “breadboards,” or thin plastic boards that can hold together electronic components, they are often stiff and slow. With the rigidity of these electronic backbones in mind, MIT researchers developed “FlexBoard,” a flexible breadboard that enables rapid prototyping of objects with interactive sensors, actuators, and displays on curved and deformable surfaces, such as a ball or clothes.
To illustrate the platform’s versatility…
