Our government shouldn’t be spying on journalists. Nor should law enforcement agencies force journalist to identify their confidential sources or go to prison.
To fix this, we need to change the law. Now, we’ve got our best chance in years. The House of Representatives has passed the Protect Reporters from Exploitive State Spying (PRESS) Act, H.R. 4250and it’s one of the strongest federal shield bills for journalists we’ve seen.
Take Action
Tell Congress To Pass the PRESS Act Now
The PRESS Act would do two critical things: first, it would bar federal law enforcement from surveillance journalists by gathering their…

Flexing the Lifespan of AI-Enabled Electronic Devices | News & Events | Computer Science
When it comes to electronic waste, “WEEE” is not an exclamation of excitement but rather an indicator of a global crisis. “Waste of Electrical and Electronic Equipment” is steadily increasing as technology advances: about 50 million metric tons of WEEE are generated annually worldwide, which is expected to increase to 111 million tons per year by 2050.
While retrofitting devices, from cell phones to vehicles, faces many challenges – it is often easier and more affordable to buy new – researchers see promise in novel machine learning-enabled cyber-physical systems (LE-CPSs) to build flexibility into hardware and thus increase lifespan, reduce…
The Course: Electronic Media Production
If you enjoy visual storytelling, multitasking, video production, and the idea of learning how to direct a live multicamera production doesn’t sound intimidating, then Electronic Media Production (JOUR 202), is the class for you.
“I joke that directing is like multitasking on steroids. In the beginning most students are overwhelmed with all of the director responsibilities; however, once they do it there is a great sense of accomplishment,” said Ream, who teaches Electronic Media Production for undergraduate students. Ream is also executive producer of UNLV-TV, housed in the Hank Greenspun School of Journalism and Media Studies.
Ream recently celebrated her…
Kari Lake’s lawsuit over metro Phoenix’s electronic tabulation systems has been tossed out
PHOENIX (AP) — A federal appeals court tossed out a lawsuit brought by former Arizona gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake that was previously dismissed, challenging the use of electronic tabulation systems and that sought to ban them in last year’s midterm elections.
Lake and failed Arizona Secretary of State candidate Mark Finchem, both Republicans, filed a lawsuit in April 2022 that alleged the ballot tabulation systems were not trustworthy.
The former Phoenix TV anchor wound up losing her race by more than 17,000 votes while Finchem lost by over 120,000 votes.
In the ruling Monday, the 9th US Circuit Court of…
Canadian e-waste has tripled, new study finds | Waterloo News
New research finds that Canada’s electrical and electronic waste (e-waste) has more than tripled in the last two decades, the equivalent of filling the CN tower 110 times and generating close to a million tons in 2020 alone.
The University of Waterloo researchers completed the first comprehensive estimate of e-waste in Canada to understand its lifecycle, from sales of electronic items to e-waste generation. Their findings reveal that the e-waste generation per person has increased from 8.3 kg in 2000 to 25.3 kg in 2020. The e-waste in Canada is expected to continue rising in the near future and underscores…
E-waste in the EU: facts and figures (infographic) | Topics
Why do we need to recycle electronic and electrical waste?
Discarded electronic and electrical equipment contains potentially harmful materials that pollute the environment and increase the risks for people involved in recycling e-waste. To counter this problem, the EU has passed legislation to prevent the use of certain chemicals, like lead.
Many rare minerals that are needed in modern technology come from countries that do not respect human rights. To avoid inadvertently supporting armed conflict and human rights abuses, MEPs have adopted rules requiring European importers of rare earth minerals to carry out background checks on their suppliers.
