Electrons move through a conducting material like commuters at the heights of Manhattan rush hour. The charged particles may jostle and bump against each other, but for the most part they’re unconcerned with other electrons as they hurtle forward, each with their own energy.
But when a material’s electrons are trapped together, they can settle into the exact same energy state and start to behave as one. This collective, zombie-like state is what’s known in physics as an electronic “flat band,” and scientists predict that when electrons are in this state they can start to feel the quantum effects of…
In a groundbreaking move to boost domestic electronics production, the Government of India has recently implemented restrictions on the import of laptops, tablets and personal computers falling under HSN 8741 category. As per the government notification, the import of restricted items will be allowed only against a valid license.
Reacting to this, Hari Om Rai, Chairman and Co-founder of Lava International, praised the government’s initiative and called it a “leadership move” that will benefit both the industry and consumers.
In his statement to ANI, Rai emphasized the significance of this restriction, which aims to drive electronics manufacturing within India’s borders.…
We think a lot about where products come from when we buy them, less so about where they go when we’re finished. When we throw things away, this is “away”: mountains of garbage across acres of land, with tens of thousands of people shifting through it, in places like the African nation of Ghana.
In Ghana, e-waste exported by the West is mined for valuable metals and other materials.

HOUSTON—The message on the signs at the recycling drop-off site here was clear, and warmly welcomed by area residents who visited on a recent autumn Saturday to stuff bags of plastic waste into large green metal containers.
“All plastic, all numbers, all symbols,” proclaims one sign at the recycling site in Houston’s suburban Kingwood community, referring to the seven standard types of plastics, commonly identified on a plastic product by a number inside a “chasing arrows” icon. “Bag it and bring it,” reads another.
Normally, recycling programs limit what kinds of plastic they accept, ruling out types that are difficult…
