During those early years, you really do seem to spend more time, effort and money on your baby’s wardrobe than on your own. But with so many cute baby outfits available, it’s not hard to see why. Besides, babies grow so fast (and play so hard), it feels like you’re constantly having to update.

Stock up for the season ahead – or find the perfect baby shower gift (just make sure you get a couple of sizes bigger – did I mention babies grow fast?) and while you’re at it, you might even find time for a spot of adult-size shopping…

Here are our favorite baby clothing brands – and where to find them:

What should I consider when buying clothes for my baby?

The most important thing when they’re really small is the quality of the fabric and how easy they are to get on and off. Soft cottons and terry or fleece fabrics are best as they are low-irritant and breathable, and unlikely to aggravate any sensitive newborn skin. Second, you want to consider how easy it is to dress and undress them. If you’ve got a wriggly, cranky or tired baby, the last thing you want to do is fussing with buttons and press-studs. Choose clothes with zips or stretchy fabric that will slip straight on and off. The other thing to consider is how durable and easy to care they are. Newborn and baby clothes should always be machine washable because they get so much poo, spew and spit on them.

Should I size up so I get more use out of it?

This is a tricky one. In the first year of life, babies grow pretty fast. I would generally say avoid sizing up for the first two years because you just don’t know how fast your baby is going to grow. If they’re in size 000 now and you’re thinking of shopping ahead for summer and buying size 0, I would just say you don’t know just where they’ll be, size-wise come December. They may have a growth spurt, they may not. You can probably shop ahead for jumpers, tees and rompers as it’s not a huge deal if those are slightly big. But when it comes to things that need to stay around their waist – like leggings, pants, shorts and skirts – I’d advise buying their regular size until it’s clear they’re growing out of them. I would also only advise buying ahead if the price is good or if you’re simply stocking up on basics because there’s nothing more disappointing than buying a special outfit that never gets worn because it doesn’t fit at the right time.
